Fishersville has no town hall or downtown square. It is a census-designated place of about 13.1 square miles that grew along U.S. 250 and Interstate 64 between two cities, and its population rose from 7,462 in 2010 to 9,629 in 2020. Because it is unincorporated, you pay Augusta County taxes and use county services, not those of Staunton or Waynesboro, even though the mailing addresses can look similar.
Its anchors are institutional. Augusta Health, formed in 1994 by merging King's Daughters Hospital in Staunton with Waynesboro Community Hospital, is a 255-bed hospital here near I-64, and a cardiovascular center opened in 2013. The Woodrow Wilson Complex holds the Augusta County school offices, Wilson Memorial High School and Valley Career and Technical Center. The state's Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center is also in the community.
History runs deeper than the roadside suggests. The Tinkling Spring area was settled by 1740, when its Presbyterian congregation was founded. Today the land mixes farm fields, newer subdivisions and commercial strips, and the Blue Ridge fills the eastern horizon. Fishersville is a place you drive to and through, with most errands done by car.
