Verona is a place where the government moved in. For 281 years Augusta County ran from downtown Staunton. In June 2026 the Board of Supervisors cut the ribbon on a new 124,000-square-foot courthouse at the Government Center in Verona, ending that run. Voters rejected the idea in 2016 and approved it in 2022. The county's administration and school division offices at 18 Government Center Lane had already been here for years, so the move completed a shift that started around 1990.
The community itself is a CDP, a census-designated place, not a town. It has no mayor, council or town taxes of its own. You pay Augusta County rates, use county services and, outside the water and sewer lines, you may rely on a well and septic system. The older layer shows in two National Register listings: the 1911 Verona School on Route 11 and a property called Mount Airy.
The setting is a mix of strip commercial along Lee Highway, subdivisions of the last few decades, and farmland that begins within a mile or two of the main road. Interstate access is the reason many people choose it, and also the reason to listen for traffic. A courthouse adds weekday visitors to the roads around the Government Center, so check the traffic yourself at midday.
